LAKE HOSPITAL SYSTEM
PROVIDENCE HOSPITAL
LAKE HOSPITAL SYSTEM
The origin of LAKE HOSPITAL SYSTEM dates back to 1902 when it was founded as the area's first county hospital, now known as LakeEast Hospital. Today, it has grown to a two-hospital system - LakeEast Hospital and LakeWest Hospital - complemented by five ambulatory centers across its service area. The System is serviced by 500 physicians and 2,200 healthcare professionals. While its size and scope of capabilities has broadened through the years, Lake Hospital System stands by its original vision: to provide comprehensive healthcare services to the residents of Lake County and neighboring communities in partnership with those who share a commitment to local access, healing with compassion and superior quality.

THE ASSIGNMENT
In order to successfully position itself for the next 100 years, Lake Hospital System's Board turned to HealthCare Concepts for objective insights and recommendations about the System's strategic direction. One of the critical goals of the hospital was to maintain its independence in an environment of limited capital and intense competition from three neighboring hospital systems armed with greater resources and technology. As part of the development of the Strategic Business Plan, there was a need to evaluate the physical capacity, usefulness and efficiency of LakeEast Hospital - the original county hospital. HealthCare Concepts gained a clear understanding of Lake Hospital System's market through a number of rigorous assessments, starting with a Market Profile and Assessment. Notably, this process included a significant number of interviews with hospital and community representatives, physicians, Board members, executive management, key department heads and local civic leaders. HealthCare Concepts also conducted organizational research through focus groups and a hospital-wide employee survey to learn more about the System's efficiency and technological capabilities. By uncovering the strengths and weaknesses of the hospital, as well as consistent themes throughout the organization and market, HealthCare Concepts helped the hospital map out the direction for the Strategic Business Plan.

THE ENGAGEMENT OF SERVICES
In light of the critical role of the LakeEast Hospital in the charting of the System's future, the Strategic Business Plan was expanded to include the development of a Master Facility Plan for LakeEast Hospital. The Master Plan explored the facility capacity in relation to current and projected demand. It also included an assessment of the option of refurbishing the current facility versus the option of relocation. Over the course of the nine-month engagement, HealthCare Concepts facilitated a series of sessions with the hospital Board to share findings and recommendations in an effort to advance the project and build consensus among decision-makers about the best course of action for the future of the System.

THE RESULTS
Based on HealthCare Concepts' market and facility analysis, a Strategic Business Plan emerged with a clear direction for the future and the full support of management and the Board. This Plan supported the essence of the Mission of the System with a commitment to independence.
